Checking Out The Tunes & Other Stuff in Ellicottville

By Robby & Sherman Wilkens

April, the month that springs us towards summer, is half over. Tax day is Monday and our golf season is underway. Both Holiday Valley’s Double Black Diamond Course and Elkdale Country Club are up and running, complete with carts. From what we have seen so far, we are off to an excellent start to our area’s summer season of golf and other out-door FUN STUFF.

The music and other FUN stuff are also going strong. So as we walk this way through the week of Friday April 13, 2012 through Thursday April 19, 2012, we will find seven Bands, playing nine gigs, two DJ’s, one Rolling Stones Tribute Weekend Party and a couple of Sound System Music Events happening here in Ellicottville creating our spring time of GOOD TIMES.

This weekend, The Depot will hold their annual weekend tribute party honoring “The Rolling Stones”. The FUN begins Friday at 7:30 PM and will continue through Saturday, also beginning at 7:30 PM. The featured band for this weekend event will again be “The Glimmer Twins” an excellent “Rolling Stones” tribute band. This eight-piece band has performed all over The United States and puts on a show that is unbelievably good. Their performances, as we said, will begin at 7:30 PM Friday and again at 7:30 PM Saturday night. You may call The Depot 716 699 4774 for more details and ticket information.

Madigans, around 7:00 PM, Friday and Saturday, will again have their Sound System playing Madigans version of “Party Favorites” until 10:00 PM when Club Madigans takes over. Then, as they always do, The FUN & Festivities will increase till close. Also, weather permitting; Madigans Up-Stairs Patio & Party Bar will be open.

The first Friday single band gig, featuring “Blues Child”, will commence at 7:00 PM in Balloons. Here we have a five-piece, extremely Hi-Energy, Crossover to Rockin Blues to Classic Rock Band. This is their first trip to Balloons. What’s really neat about this band is they have a long history in really good party music. They have played other Ellicottville venues and every time they have performed they have put on a show that has the appreciative crowd up and PARTY-N all night long. Like their promo says, “You will love their Jethro Tull Tunes”. Following “Blues Child”, “Personable DJ John Barry” will be in Balloons New Sound Booth doing his LIVE Personality Show Off & Party Continuation Show featuring his chitter-chatter and FUN danceable tunes, till close.

Balloons starts Saturday rolling at 6:00 PM with a new band for Ellicottville, “Stinger” This newly formed Buffalo Band consists of five veteran Buffalo Musicians. The one Ellicottvilleites will recognize is Kenny G, the keyboard player from The Strangers. Their web site portrays them as an electrifying band playing classic rock/pop and dance music from the sixties thru today. Their song list really looks good also. This will be another really neat Balloons Music Night. Following “Stinger”, “DJ Flakey, Friendly or if you wish, Chatty Frank Watson”, who is “The Original Party Monster” has reassured Balloons that his pass from The Disoriented DJ Home has been renewed again. Thereby, allowing him to do his All Ages Friendly, Party Continuation, Show from Balloons New Sound & Light Booth till close. Bring your dancin shoes for this one.

Returning to 9:00 PM Saturday there will be two bands playing. First The Gin Mill will have “The Easy Street Sliders” in house. This Delta to Chicago Blues Band has performed here for the last two Winter Blues Festivals. The show they put on gives true meaning to Ellicottville’s Winter Blues Festival. So if you are a fan of The Blues, The Gin Mill will be the place to be this Saturday for another wonderful Chicago/Delta Blues Show. Also remember you may order an excellent, yet reasonably priced, meal in The Gin Mill till midnight on weekends.

Also at 9:00 PM Saturday, The PUB in Great Valley will be hosting their second Anniversary Party featuring the music of “Bad Influence”. This is “The Bad Influence Band” from Salamanca that is a new one for our area. What we know of them is they bill themselves as Rock and Party Band that enjoys playing locally. Being The PUB is local, all will enjoy good Party Time they create this Saturday night.

We are still are in The Quiet Sunday mode. Therefore, lets move on to Monday, which again will be a single band night. As usual, we begin Monday’s line up in The Gin Mill where you will find their friendly and FUN staff on duty serving up their daily food and drink specials in a good down home atmosphere. Thereby creating the FUN times that are always so prevalent in The Gin Mill.

Moving around the corner to Balloons, where Mike Brady will be hosting their music, pizza and twenty-five cent wing Monday Night Special. The music will come from Balloons New Sound & Light System. So stop in Balloons this Monday, say “Hi Mike”. Then enjoy the FUN, music, pizza and excellent twenty-five cent wings.

Monday’s single gig will be Madigans Church On Monday, beginning at 10:00 PM Sharpe. The Reverend Jack DarZaFasette, the creator of this All Original Music Happenin, that occasionally will include other local music characters, will be doing this original, FUN and entertaining gig in Madigans again this Monday. One more thing, the rumors going around that Mr. DarZaFasette is putting together an acoustic duo for even more music FUN & GOOD TIMES, as we said, has been confirmed. The venue where they will be playing is still unconfirmed.

Moving to Wednesday at 8:00 PM, The Gin Mill, as always, will have Joe Wagner and John Winston doing their over twenty-five year Wednesday tradition of wonderful sixties through the eighties folk to southern rock acoustic tunes. As we say most every week, this Gin Mill Tradition is one of the best and most FUN music nights in Ellicottville. So stop by The Gin Mill, enjoy some excellent wings and the great music performed by Joe and John. Some times others will join in. You never know how much FUN Wednesday night in The Gin Mill will be till you check it out yourself.

Thursday our music rounds out for the week at 8:00 PM with “The Weekly Notice Band” ROCKIN The Gin Mill.  This week’s version, like last week, will be “The FAR OUT Band”. Which, as we know, is The Freddie And RT Outstanding Band. So, as we always say, Brian or RT or maybe both will join Freddie, making “The Weekly or Moments Notice Band” a Unique and FUN Gin Mill Music Experience this and every Thursday. This Thursday will be more of the same and that is a very good thing.
