First Annual Holiday Valley Mudslide Obstacle Run on June 16

For a slipping, sloppy good time, plan a visit to Holiday Valley Resort on June 16, 2012, for the first annual Mudslide Obstacle Race. This trail run will take place on the Holiday Valley ski trails where participants will navigate eight obstacles along the very muddy 3.5-mile or 5.4-mile courses. It’s guaranteed to be a fun event for people of all ages and fitness levels.

The 3.5-mile course will travel east across the cross-country trails to the top of Eagle, down Woodstock, across Explorer to Morning Star, then through the woods and across Mardi Gras, down Holiday Run to Edelweiss with a finish at the Training Center. The short-course elevation has a downhill drop of 600 feet.

The 5.4-mile long course adds a loop from Eagle across to Cindy’s, down Bear Cub and then a challenging uphill to Explorer where it joins back into the short course. Eight obstacles will be placed along the trail including a log pile, a “slalom” course, a maze with the final challenge a giant mud slide down lower Yodeler.

Pick up your race packet on Friday, June 15, from 6–9 p.m. at Tamarack or Saturday morning, June 16, from 8–10 a.m. The event will start at 11 a.m. at Spruce Lake. A ride to the start on the Spruce Lake chairlift is included in the entry fee. Spectators may ride up the lift for $5.

Medals will be awarded to all finishers. Prizes will be awarded to the overall three fastest males and females, as well as the most creative costumes, at the post-race party on the Champagne Sundeck. Changing facilities will be available and snow guns on Yodeler will double as rustic showers.

You can pre-register at and until June 7. The cost is $45 for the 3.5- or the 5.4-mile run, and $10 for the kids’ run (up to age 12). Day-of-race registration takes place from 8–10 a.m. and is $60 for the 3.5- or 5.4-mile run, and $15 for the kids’ run. Pre-registered competitors are guaranteed a t-shirt, and all competitors will receive a goody bag as well as a cool finisher’s medal.

After the event, make a stop in Ellicottville and be sure to wear your finisher’s medal, because many of the businesses will be offering specials to those wearing them. Check with the Inn at Holiday Valley and the Tamarack for special lodging packages including Mudslide entry fees. Start training and get ready for some muddy fun!
