Hog-Shed Studio Celebrates 30 Years of Making Pottery Fun, Food, Friends and Pottery

EAST OTTO – Come and join Elliott and Michael Hutten of Hog-Shed Studio Pottery on June 2–3, 2012, as we celebrate our 30th year of producing high-fired functional stoneware pottery. Our celebration will feature an opportunity to view and purchase a huge selection of Elliott’s vintage pottery.  These are pieces that have been held back as favorites, pieces that never made it to the showroom, along with specialty items and much, much more.

As a special treat, we will be providing free hot dogs and ice cream on June 2, and beverages throughout the whole weekend. Come early, because it’s first come first served!

When we began our pottery business in 1982, we sought to make use of Elliott’s talents and creativity to provide a way to supplement our income while limiting the travel away from home. Initially, we sold our pottery exclusively at local craft shows around the Western New York area. At nearly every art show someone would ask, “Do you have your own shop?”

Soon we were able to answer “yes,” because we had converted our old machinery shed into a production studio with a modest area set aside for display. As the years passed, we improved the production tools and the display area. Our sales now reflect the benefits of those improvements, because we now sell most of our work right here at our shop and just a small percentage at the art shows.

Our hope is that our 30th anniversary celebration will be a kind of “thank you” to the many friends that we have made throughout the years. People come into our studio and we never know in advance what their expectations may be. But, what we have seen is that after looking around, our customers become interested in talking with us and asking questions. We appreciate this opportunity to educate the public about the creative process of turning a lump of clay into a beautiful handmade pot, something that they will use in their home to add quiet pleasure to their daily lives. Through this human connection we have the wonderful experience of gaining a new friend who loves the pottery and wants to purchase more pieces for themselves and as gifts for others. The beauty of this whole process is that it sustains both the business and the personal side of our endeavor: the potter and the pottery continue because of the generous support from our many devoted customers.

So come to join us! Our 30th Anniversary Open House Celebration and Vintage Pottery Sale will take place from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Call us at (716) 257-9549, or visit or for directions.
