Eagles Football Off to Strong Start

ECS football is headed for a strong year. Beginning Aug. 13, double practice days Monday through Thursday from 8-10 a.m. and 6-8 p.m. for two weeks will prepare the Eagles for a year they hope will take them deep into playoffs.

Tim Bergan, the varsity football coach, is a physical education teacher for the high school and middle school at ECS. Coaching for 30 plus years, he has not only dedicated himself to football but also has coached for girls’ and boys’ basketball and softball.

Assistant coaches Chris Mendell and Jim Pawlowski are helping to make this year a successful one. Mendell is the elementary physical education teacher at ECS and the varsity baseball coach. Jim Pawlowski is the offensive and defensive line coach for the ECS football.

From 2000 to 2006, ECS football had their glory years when the team averaged eight wins per year, a sectional title and three opportunities to go to the Section 6, Class D title game. The football history for the ECS Eagles hit a rough patch in 2009 and 2010 when only two games were won each year. The program had a comeback last year, ending their season 4-4, which made them a fourth seed in the Class DD Division.

With six seniors on this years’ varsity football team, they are hoping to make it far this year with an unforgettable season. Storm Wilson, Taylor Grinols, Greg Knier, Will Murphy, Jake Rinko and Jake Stoll are this year’s hardworking seniors willing to lead the team to victory.

“The team should be the best we have been in a while,” said Taylor Grinols, No. 7, playing split end for ECS. “We used to be a young team, but now we’re older faster and stronger.”

Dylan Paprocki, No. 62, and junior veteran playing offensive guard and defense, middle linebacker on the varsity team, said, “We are looking better this year than we have in the past and we are not hoping, but planning on going farther this year than last.”

The first football game this season takes place Aug. 31 at ECS against Forestville under the lights starting at 7:30 p.m. Come to support the Ellicottville Eagles!
