The Olean Kennel Club is starting a series of classes the first and second week of April. Classes are taught by certified dog obedience instructors and use positive training methods. Registration is limited and available on a first come basis. The Olean Kennel Club also sponsors classes in obedience, rally obedience, conformation, and agility.
In 1989, the American Kennel Club began a program called the Canine Good Citizen. This training and evaluation is designed to help owners train their dogs to be good family members and good citizens in their communities.
By teaching things like sit, down, stay, come, walking politely on a leash, greeting people and other dogs, and allowing a veterinarian to examine them a dog becomes a welcome member of its family and community. Many rental properties now require residents to give their dogs this training.
As of January 2013, dogs who pass this test can now receive an official AKC title. This is available to mixed breed dogs as well as AKC registered dogs.
The Olean Kennel Club provides Canine Good Citizen obedience classes and has added the new AKC class for puppies (under one year old) called AKC STAR classes. The STAR stands for socialization, training, activity, and responsibility. The younger a puppy starts training, the better for their development. Again, these classes are open to all dogs -pedigree or mixed.
