Jammers Set for Fresh Start with Pirates

JammersJamestown, N.Y. – The start of the 2013 New York-Penn League season is less than a month away and the Jammers are set to kick things off with a new affiliate. Fans will see a new look Jammers squad hit the field at Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Park this summer as the team enters its first year as an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Jammers ended an 11-year affiliation with Florida/Miami Marlins in September of 2012 by signing a two-year player development contract. The two-year deal gives the Jammers organization the opportunity to re-establish itself with the Pirates organization that features a lot of youthful and energetic prospects.

This will be the third affiliation agreement between the two teams in their respective histories. The 1939 Jamestown Jaguars competed in the six team PONY (Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York) League that featured an exhibition game between the two clubs, which ended in a 1-1 tie. The 1957 Jamestown Falcons competed in the then eight team New York-Penn League and featured two players; Donn Clendenon and Julian Javier who would each go on to play several years in the major leagues.

This season will mark the 20th in Jammers baseball history and 72nd season that Diethrick Park has played host to a team. The 2013 NY-Penn League season opens up on Thursday, June 20 as the Williamsport Crosscutters come into town for a three game series. All three games are set to start at 7:05 p.m. with gates opening an hour prior to game time. Opening week will be filled with fun activities for all ages as there will be a post-game fireworks display after Thursday night’s game. Friday night will feature pocket schedule giveaways for all fans in attendance.

The opening festivities will conclude on Saturday night as the “Pittsburgh Parrot” will be in town to entertain fans along with the Jammers own “Bubba Grape” as the Pirates Mascot marks the first time that a major league mascot will make the trip to Diethrick Park.
