Scenic Byway Postcard Exhibit
In partnership with the Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway Committee, SCA presents a call for artwork. Artists are asked to submit a single black and white image along with text for a postcard exhibit.
Images may be original art, photographs of scenery, portraits or abstract but must have a connection to the communities and geography of the Byway area. The cards will be displayed at Arts Underground, 66 East Main St. in Springville beginning with an opening reception on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. The deadline for submission is Oct. 9.
Tas Cru Performs Solo
Tas Cru’s songs are blues poetry — telltale life lessons crafted with rare verbal flair and delivered with a power and passion the heights of which only the seasoned concert entertainer can reach. As part of the Acoustic Autumn series, Tas Cru will perform on Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Mongerson Theater, 37 N. Buffalo Street, Springville. Called “the master of the triple entendre,”Cru’s songs are raucous, rowdy, gentle, sweet, eccentric, quirky and outright irreverent and testify to his reputation as a one of the most unique bluesmen plying his trade today.
Tickets are available for $13 presale at SpringvilleArts.org, by calling (716) 592-9038 or at the door for $15.
Pen and Ink Workshop
Painter and illustrator Karen Olejniczak will offer a pen and ink workshop inspired by the architecture and landscape surrounding the WNY Southtowns Scenic Byway. Bring an architectural or landscape photograph from along the Byway and get hands-on experience rendering it into a sharp, black and white illustration. This one-session workshop runs from 1–4 p.m. Sept. 21. Registration is encouraged. Workshop takes place at Arts Underground, 66 East Main St.
Hiroya Tsukamato, Singer-Songwriter from Japan
SCA presents Hiroya Tsukamoto as the second artist in the Acoustic Autumn series. Hiroya is a one-of-a-kind composer, guitarist and singer-songwriter from Kyoto, Japan, who brings his earthy blend of world and classical music on Sept. 28 at 8 p.m.
Hiroya began playing the five-string banjo when he was, and took up the guitar shortly after. In 1994, he entered The Osaka University and while at college in Japan, Hiroya was introduced to a musical and social movement in South America called Nueva Cancion headed by musical legends such as Victor Jara and Violeta Parra.
Hiroya has been leading concerts with his group including several appearances at Blue Note in New York and he performed with Esperanza Spalding, Marta Gomez, Kendrick Scott (The Crusaders), Pete Kennedy (The Kennedys) and Dave Maxwell (Muddy Waters Band).
