Six teams participated in the “Rise to the Challenge” race, including the Milton Ontario Special Olympics Team, the Mississauga Dream Team, Buffalo Ski Club Adaptive Program, Swain Ski Area Shared Adventures, and HoliMont’s Phoenix Program. The 52 happy skiers all received medals and certificates at the awards ceremony in the main chalet.
This year’s race was again the highlight of the Phoenix Adaptive Program, which is made up of athletes from the US and Canada. The race brings out the best of the racers’ abilities in adaptive skiing.
Rising to the Challenge
A very special thanks goes out to Carianne Herrich, a Phoenix volunteer, who stepped up and organized the event.
Thanks to Wendy and the HoliMont snow sports staff, especially Dianne, for the pre-race documentation. Tina Dillon organized breakfast and lunch for the race teams, and Cheryl Green made sure that registration went smooth and orderly. Bruce Heine chaired the event and organized the teams on the hill with the help of Eric and Gail Niparts, and their course volunteers. Travis Widger and the HoliMont Race Program made sure the racers got to their starting gate. Ski Patrol and Safety kept the event safe. Al Stocker once again provided popcorn in the chalet. Tina Dillon held a 50/50 raffle – and the winner generously donated their winnings back to the Phoenix program.
A big thank you also goes out to all the volunteers and parents for their help in making this year’s event a success. Thanks to all that donated items in the “goody bag.” The MC, Dan Balkin, did a great job of announcing the award ceremony. Another special thanks to the Romanowski family for their generous donation to help support this year’s race. And a big thanks to all that cheered the racers on to victory. They all had a great day!
At the awards ceremony, Chuck Richardson, Phoenix Program Director, along with Carianne, handed out the medals, while Dan Balkin introduced each team. After the ceremony, participants enjoyed the Après Ski party in the main chalet.
After this year’s terrific job, Carianne, Bruce, Tina, Al and all their helpers plan to return for the 2015 Phoenix International Adaptive Race. Save the date— Feb. 7, 2015. Thanks again to everyone involved!
