ECS Sports Roundup Scanlon Strikes 3rd Among Section 6 at States

By Todd Palmatier

The winter season has officially come to a close at ECS with only the ECS Sports Boosters Winter Sports Banquet to be held next week March 11 at ECS. The Sports boosters will be having a 50/50 drawing and will be giving away door prizes that have been graciously donated by our local businesses.

Ellicottville senior Courtney Scanlon completed her final year of bowling for ECS by competing in the state meet in West Babylon, N.Y., this past weekend. The Section 6 bowling team came home with a second place finish. Courtney was the first ever ECS bowler to compete in the state meet and finished third among the Section 6 bowlers and 11th overall. She had a 234 high game, a 191.6 average and six-game series of 1,150. She was also voted to the Section 6 sportsmanship award while at states by her peers. This season was a sendoff for Courtney, who has finished another sports career at ECS. ECS Coach Sandy Olson is calling it a career at ECS as the bowling coach as well.

The ECS Alpine Ski team completed its season last week as well at states, and Coach Kelly Fredrickson stated that the team is growing and is expecting great things to come with more skiers taking to the slopes in the future. For the girls at states, Shelby Toth finished 56th out of 111 skiers and received a section 6 sportsmanship award for her dedication to her sport. In boys, skiing Alex Paddock finished 49th and 50th, respectively, in the slalom and giant slalom events. Alex was also awarded the section 6 sportsmanship award.

Spring sports have already kicked off at ECS. Both baseball and softball have begun practice at ECS. The boys’ baseball team is led by Varsity Coach Chris Mendell, JV Coach Rob Sawicki and Modified Coach Nick Smith, while girls’ softball is led by Varsity Coach Matt Finn, JV Coach Dave McCann and Modified Coach Tammy Eddy. The varsity golf team is in full swing, as well, under the direction of Coach Daniel LaCroix.

In youth basketball, the grade 5-6 boys’ team is off to the Archbishop Walsh tournament this weekend. The team will be represented by Braedyn Palmatier, Wyatt Chudy, Clayton Rowland, Hayden Rust, Leif Jimmerson and Blaise Konarski. Good luck, boys!

ECLV baseball and softball signups are this Saturday in the ECS elementary school foyer from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
