When the snow starts to melt, it can only mean one thing — that spring in Ellicottville is almost here. While people around here might be sad to see winter come to a close, the warmer temps and sunnier days equate to lots of fun on the slopes and around town.

Hit the Slopes

While You Still Can

There’s still lots of fun to be had at Holiday Valley and HoliMont in the last couple weeks of the season.

Head to Holiday Valley this Saturday, March 22 for the annual Pond Skimming event, where participants skim across an ice water filled pond, decked out in costumes. The fun begins at 1 p.m., and spectators are welcome.

The Acrobag Jump will also be available this Friday, Saturday and Sunday for some high-flying adventure with a soft landing.

See more details on this weekend’s events at Holiday Valley on page 6.

Over at HoliMont, the slopes are open to the public Monday through Friday. Go on a Friday and end your work week with a Dina’s fish fry in the main lodge, running from 6–8:30 p.m. Friday evenings.

Discover Something Sweet

March 22-23 and March 29-30 are both Maple Weekends across New York State. During these weekends, local sugar houses will open their operations to the public, presenting a unique opportunity for visitors to see how syrup is made, and of course, sample the delicious results! Take in Some Music

On any given weekend, the village of Ellicottville is filled with the sights and sounds of people letting loose and enjoying the nightlife. Check out the entertainment listings on page 3 to find out where your favorite band is playing.

In addition, the Enchanted Music Festival is scheduled for April 11-13, at Holiday Valley in the Holiday Valley Lodge. Concerts featuring bluegrass, roots music and workshops will highlight the weekend. Tickets are available for the entire weekend, or for individual concerts. Visit www.holidayvalley.com to purchase tickets.

Take a Hike

It may be muddy, but spring is a great time to get back out into the great outdoors on the area’s numerous hiking trails. Check out miles of marked trails, ranging from easy to quite challenging, at Allegany State Park, New York’s largest state park.

Hiking trails can also be found at nearby McCarty State Forest, which connects with trails at both Holiday Valley and HoliMont.

Make a Splash

Whitewater rafting is a popular activity for adventure seekers, and spring is a great time to go, while the water levels are at their highest.

Rafting companies in Zoar Valley offer trips for anyone looking for some fast-paced fun while checking out the beautiful bluffs and scenery of Zoar Valley. Plan to work hard, get wet and have a blast! For more information, visit www.cattraftingadventures.com or www.zoarvalleyrafting.com.

Ellicottville is a place where fun and adventure collide, and early spring is no exception. Enjoy the early signs of the season and enjoy all this area has to offer this time of year!
