Non-Stop Laughs at Pond Skimming This Weekend

Launch off the Acrobag and Race the Northwind Super-G

It’s one of the last events of ski season that’s always good for lots of laughs and entertainment. Pond Skimming at Holiday Valley has become a late season annual tradition.

The event attracts competitors of all ages to the Yodeler hill, where they ski down, usually in fabulous costumes, and at the bottom, skim across an icy cold pond. There’s no pond at the bottom of Yodeler, you say? No not usually, but on this weekend every year, there is.

“First the snowmakers make a big mound of snow for the Winter Carnival snowbar, then the grooming crew flattens it and a pond is dug out with a snowcat,” said Jane Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley’s marketing director. “The Mountain Crew lines it with a tarp. Then it is filled with water from our snowmaking system. Since this is really cold water to start with, and it is surrounded by snow, it is REALLY cold! It is about 2 feet deep, about 20 feet wide by 80 feet long.”

About 60 people are expected to participate, with many more cheering them on. Registration takes place outside Yodeler Lodge, beginning at 11 a.m. Pond Skimming starts at 1 p.m., and participants will compete for awards for Best Skimmer, Best Costume, Best Kid and Best Splash.

While at Yodeler, visitors can also enjoy a cookout and drink specials, as well as live music by DJ John Barry.

Also this weekend is the Acrobag Jump, running March 20-23. The Acrobag is a giant, air-filled bag that softens the landings of participants launching off a ramp and showing off their skills. Tickets are available at the jump.

Come out Sunday to be part of the Northwind Super-G, open to all, where speeds are measured by a radar gun. Registration is $5 at the Training Center between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. The Rangers race is at 11 a.m., and everyone else begins at 12:30 p.m.
