RTA Exhibition Opens April 25 at JCC

The Center Gallery at Jamestown Community College’s Olean Campus will host the Cattaraugus County Art Council’s (CCAC) Routes to Art exhibition opening April 25 and running through May 9. The exhibition will launch with a public reception on April 25, from 6–8 p.m. and will feature happy hour refreshments and live music in addition to a diverse selection of artwork. The exhibition will serve as a preview for the annual Routes to Art (RTA) open studio tour weekend in May when artists across the region will open their doors to the public.

Now in its seventh year, Routes to Art is a self-guided open studio tour that takes place this year on May 17-18 from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. During the RTA weekend, artists will open their homes, studios, and businesses to welcome visitors and present their artwork. The preview exhibition is a perfect way to see a sample of this work under one roof.

Anne Conroy-Baiter, acting executive director of CCAC, says the RTA exhibition is always a highlight of the program, both for artists and guests.

“This year’s Routes to Art open studio weekend features 42 artists, including 10 new participants, and the preview exhibition at JCC is a great way to see them all in one place. New artists, such as Mikel Wintermantel of Allegany, Carey Ann Welch of Ellicottville, and Sarah Walker of Cattaraugus, will join RTA veterans Sean Huntington, Elliott Hutten, Barbara Fox and more. The exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to see the wide variety of RTA mediums this year, from paintings to jewelry to toys to chainsaw sculptures, choose whose work to see more of on RTA weekend, and meet the artists at the same time,” said Conroy-Baiter.

New this year, the opening will feature a live musical performance from the LTM Trio. The group features members Les Sabina, Thomas Gestwicki and Moses Howden, who will perform jazz standards and original compositions throughout the evening. Complimentary refreshments and hors d’oeuvres from Sheila Darrow will also be offered. The event is free and open to the public and will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 25. The exhibition will be on display until May 9. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.–7 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m.–3 p.m.
