EVL Police Warn of New Phone Scam

The Ellicottville Police Department is warning business owners about a phone scam going around. Businesses are receiving multiple phone calls from people claiming to be from National Grid. The caller then states the business is going to have their electrical service shut off within the hour for nonpayment of service, unless a payment is made immediately. The caller then states that the business must pay for the service via Western Union. Many of the businesses that were contacted, in fact, received several more calls from the same phony company even after the business told the fraudulent company that National Grid was contacted and their bill was up to date.

The Ellicottville Police Department would like to remind everyone not to give out personal information over the phone, and if you feel a call is suspicious, hang up and contact law enforcement.
