Summertime in Western New York means lots of outlets to get your workout in, and trail runs are a popular way to do just that. It’s cardio with a big dose of adventure — never boring, always exciting!
On Sunday, July 27, join hundreds of other like-minded runners for a challenging run through the trails at Holiday Valley and surrounding state land at the EVL-4 and EVL-9 Trail Runs.
“The Ellicottville-4 and 9 are intermediate level races held on hilly terrain and singletrack trails. Challenging and a thrill since they take a lot of balance, stamina and attention versus running on flat ground,” said Mark Lawrence of Heartrateup.com, the organization that puts on the race. “It’s a wonderful experience and runners can test themselves year to year based on the weather and conditions to best their time.”
The EVL-4, which begins at 10 a.m., consists of a 4-mile route that stays entirely on Holiday Valley’s property. The EVL-9, starting at 9:30 a.m., takes runners over a 9.7-mile course that also takes advantage of terrain on the neighboring McCarty Hill State Forest. Both courses begin and end at the Holiday Valley Training Center and combine steep ascents and descents with unmatched scenery, much under the beautiful canopy of trees in the dense forest. Chip timing is also provided to ensure the most accurate times.
“Any runner, new or tenured, is welcome to enter; however, we suggest the 4-miler for first timers, “ said Lawrence. “The EVL-9 is a 9.7-mile race that is geared towards the more experienced runner, since times can range up to 3 hours.”
There is no minimum age requirement to participate, but youth should be accompanied by an adult.
Registration cost for the EVL-4 is $25, and $35 for the EVL-9. Registration includes a T-shirt, post-race party, lunch and awards in several age groups (U19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+), as well as door prizes from race sponsors.
There is a limit of 200 entrants per run, so consider pre-registering to guarantee your place at the starting line! Race day registration is available as space permits.
The EVL-4 and EVL-9 Trail Runs are sure to get your heart pumping and your muscles moving. Grab some gear, psych yourself up, and rise to the challenge — the runs are a great way to explore the wooded trails and get in an amazing workout!
