Cattaraugus County Museum Celebrates 100 Years

Excelsior-Cornet

On Sunday, Sept. 7, the Cattaraugus County Museum will mark a century of serving the public of Cattaraugus County with a special and free event, “100 Years of the Cattaraugus County Museum.”

Since a large part of the original mission of the museum when it was founded in 1914 was to commemorate the county’s Civil War veterans and house their artifacts, combined with the fact that the museum has spent the last few summers marking the sesquicentennial of the Civil War itself, we have decided that it would be fitting to plan this day with a Civil War theme.

Here is the schedule of events:

11:00 a.m. – Museum opens

12:00 p.m. – Event officially begins

12:30 p.m. – Performance of Civil War brass band music by the Excelsior Cornet Band

3:00 p.m. – Talk by Prof. Ian Binnington, ‘Earth’s Immortal Sons’: Constructing a Confederate Nation in the Midst of War

4:00 p.m. – Event closes

Continuing after the event closes, Civil War re-enactors will be on the grounds giving historical interpretation of the experiences of soldiers of that time, including musket demonstrations, discussions of uniforms and equipment, a replica surgeon’s tent, and even drill for children!

The Cattaraugus County Museum is located in the Stone House, 9824 Route 16 in Machias, N.Y. Feel free to call (716) 353-8200 with any questions.  This event is free and open to the public.
