2014 Ellicottville Christmas Cantata Rehearsals Begin

On Sunday, Nov. 2, the Ellicottville Community Choir will once again begin preparing for its annual Cantata, which will be held on Dec. 21.

The choir will be under the capable direction of Annette Ieda, from the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. Rehearsals will be held weekly at the United Church on Elizabeth Street. All 90-minute sessions will begin promptly at 1 p.m. every Sunday for seven weeks.

Annette Ieda, the director, is hoping for at least 40 people from the town to join the choir.

This year, the Cantata committee decided to invite the members of the Salamanca Community Choir, made up of singers from the surrounding community, to join voices with our choir, making a combined group of around 80 singers.

Two concerts will, therefore, be given on Dec. 21— one performance at 3 p.m. concert at the United Congregational Methodist Church in Salamanca, and another at 7 p.m. at the Holy Name of Mary Church in Ellicottville. Refreshments will be served after both concerts.

Although rehearsals will be at the United Church in Ellicottville for the four November rehearsals, the Dec. 7 and Dec. 21 rehearsals (and 3 p.m. concert) will be in Salamanca. The Dec. 14 rehearsal at 1 p.m. will be at Holy Name of Mary in Ellicottville.

Mrs. Ieda is enthusiastic about directing a large choir and hopes everyone who was involved with last year’s group will continue to support the “new venue.”

She stated, “Of course, the door will be open for even more singers, but please commit to at least five of the seven rehearsals if you plan to join up.”

The cantata committee, made up of Annette Ieda, John and Sheila Burrell, Nancy Rogan and Wendy O’Neil, are in the process of selecting a cantata for this year.

Whatever they choose, CDs will be purchased to help the singers learn their music, and books will be provided for each participant.

If you enjoy singing and want to be part of a worthwhile community Christmas project, please reserve the dates and times and come join us! No auditions required!
