By Eva Potter

Banish boring gifts from your holiday list this year and give original presents everyone on your list will appreciate. Take a few hours to explore East Otto and enjoy a leisurely drive along the scenic, rolling terrain leading you to talented local artists.

The 28th annual East Otto Country Holiday Open House takes place next weekend, Nov. 1–2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The four current members of East Otto Country Associates invite you to come and view their unique handmade artistic treasures.

Before beginning your tour, be sure to pack your gift list, because you’re likely to bring home quality-crafted items from four distinct artists, some of which you won’t want to give away. In addition, when you visit the East Otto Country Holiday Open House, you have the opportunity to purchase products made in the U.S.A. and support the local economy.

Barbara Fox will be exhibiting her wonderful watercolor paintings and limited edition prints and reproductions along with silver and gemstone jewelry at Mill Street Art Gallery, 42 Mill St. in Ellicottville. A gifted master of watercolor technique, Barbara specializes in landscape, still life and floral subjects. (www.BarbaraFoxArtStudio.com, 716-699-4145)

At Fernwood Art, 7633 Tough Row Hill Rd., Ellicottville, talented carver Keith McKale will demonstrate his skill producing hand-carved birds, feathers and wooden keepsakes. Keith’s passion for nature and meticulous attention to detail is evident in all of his hand-carved items, which include three-dimensional Christmas ornaments, Celtic love spoons, crosses and more. Enjoy talking to Robin about the stories behind her work as your view her beautiful paintings of wildlife and rural themes. Consider having Robin create an heirloom “Grandcestor” painting or custom house portrait as a holiday gift this year. To celebrate 25 years of business, Brookside Studio offers a special 25 percent off select “vintage” originals during the Holiday Open House weekend. (www.BrooksideStudio.com, 716-257-9790)
