Four Nonprofits Receive $6K in Grants

OLEAN – A local animal rescue organization is one of four charitable causes that has benefitted this year from the Higgins Memorial Golf Tournament Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

The foundation board of directors recently approved $6,000 in grants from the Higgins Memorial Golf Tournament Fund to support four nonprofit organizations.

The grants were recommended by the Higgins Memorial committee, headed by Frank Higgins of Olean.

The largest portion of the grants, $2,500, was awarded to the Empire Animal Rescue Society (EARS) of Salamanca, a cause dear to Higgins since he adopted his rescued Siberian Husky, Brady, from the organization.

“Each year we choose different charities to benefit,” noted Higgins, adding, “Partnering with the Foundation to manage this fund has helped create a new avenue for our players and sponsors to give to the fund, which helps us turn around and give more to the community.”

“EARS’ mission is to save as many animals, like Brady, as we can from high-kill shelters,” said Courtney Valent, EARS president. “We cannot thank Frank enough for choosing us to receive this grant, which will help us save 25 dogs from death row.”

The board also approved a $1,500 grant from the fund to the St. Bonaventure University golf team.

Grants totaling $1,500 to the ReHabilitation Center, as well as $500 to Home Care and Hospice, were also approved.

Donations to the Higgins Memorial Golf Tournament Fund are welcome and should be made care of the Community Foundation at 120 North Union Street, Olean, or online at www.cattfoundation.org.
