Rotary Ski Day at HoliMont

By Alicia Dziak
Need an excuse to cut out of work and ski? Mark your calendars for Friday, Feb. 13, and ski the day away at the annual Rotary Ski Day at HoliMont, where just $60 gets you a ski pass and lunch and helps supports the extensive efforts of the Ellicottville Rotary Club.
The Ellicottville Rotary aims to help and improve the community. With Rotary’s two affiliates— The Foundation for Youth and Family Support for Ellicottville— Rotary does many projects centered in and around Ellicottville.
With a core group of volunteers, 100 percent of funds raised go to support local projects, such as a $50,000 building grant to the Ellicottville Library, various other library programs and the summer park program.
Another important beneficiary is Ellicottville Central School. Each year, the Rotary also provides back-to-school supplies to students and supports lunch programs, travel and special projects for those in need at ECS.
Rotary also awards two $500 scholarships for outstanding graduates of ECS or BOCES. Special requests for eye glasses, hearing aids or clothing are fulfilled as needed.
The Rotary also funds two major programs: The Arts in Education project at Essex Arts Center for a class every year and; Rotary “Slapshot – Leadership Program” which provides a unique experience for two students every year.
Additionally, they provide funding for Little League Football, the Ellicottville Historical Society, the Alley Katz, the Ellicottville Food Pantry, Women’s Shelter, Meals on Wheels and many other local organizations.
Through Family Support for Ellicottville, the Rotary provides a “quiet helping hand” to those less fortunate in the community by providing funds for unexpected medical expenses like transportation to treatment locations. They also provide Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners every year and sponsor Santa’s Workshop, aided by Irish Christmas, which brings Christmas joy to many families in the community.
This dedicated group meets on a regular basis. “All meetings are open to the public – we meet weekly on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m.,” said Rotary member Greg Cappelli.
The Rotary’s volunteers work hard to help the community, and now’s your chance to help them support that work. Head on over to HoliMont to ski all day, or join the crowd for lunch only for $20. Lifts open at 9:30 a.m. and lunch will be served from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Cappelli pointed out that the event is also a great opportunity to “enjoy a day at HoliMont when it’s open to the public and where you’ll meet Rotarians from the district.”
Come on—you deserve a long weekend and a day on the slopes! Don’t miss out on this fun time of skiing, making new friends and supporting the Ellicottville Rotary Club. To reserve your spot, call Jack Luzier at (716) 945-2283 or email jcluzier@gmail.com.
