Brewing Up a Storm: Four Mile Brewery Now Open

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon as I sat around the custom-designed fire pit at Four Mile Brewing with my husband and good friends enjoying a rich and flavorful beer, a mouthwatering sandwich and relaxing conversation in the beer garden.

Located at 202 E. Greene St., the site of the former Olean Lumber Kitchens & Baths Center, the new brewery has a fun, hip vibe. Barstools, tables and benches made of warm wood and plumbing pipes are selectively arranged throughout the tasting room and around the crushed stone outdoor beer garden, while fun and interesting memorabilia is scattered on the walls.

Years of dreaming and careful planning culminated in the brewery’s private opening on May 2. The event attracted more than 70 visitors, including State Senator Catharine Young who made opening remarks.

And on Thursday, May 7, everyone is invited to the official grand opening beginning at 4 p.m. to enjoy the brewery’s signature Four Mile Pale Wheat, Four Mile Pale Ale, Four Mile Black IPA and Four Mile Allegheny IPA. You’ll also be able to check out the 15-barrel brew house, polished stainless steel tanks, and miles of hoses and pipes, as well as feast on delicious light fare from its full-service kitchen.

Pull up a stool in front of the oversized glass windows, to enjoy your overstuffed gourmet deli sandwich or other menu items while you watch brewers Gregg Piechota and Craig Clark create their secret recipe beers. Between them, they have more than 30 years of home brewing experience, which is obvious with each sip.

“We are excited to finally be open and can’t wait for everyone to come enjoy our beers, sandwiches, and really cool space that we’ve put together,” said Gregg Piechota, a managing member along with Jaye Beattie and Nicholas Bohdanowycz.

You can also enjoy your beer in the beer garden at picnic-style table seating or around the gorgeous, custom-made metal fire pit.

So, what’s in the tanks right now?

Piechota said, “I have a lighter version of our Pale Wheat, and a session IPA which is low alcohol and loaded with hops. Both will be great on hot summer days.”

Pints are only $5 and growlers are $20 with a fill. Get your beer to go from the sophisticated filling system, which cleans and sanitizes your growler before it’s filled and purged with CO2 to remove oxygen, which oxidizes beer and affects its flavor. Bring your own growler and it’s only $13 for a fill. You can also pick up a Pale Ale growler at West End Beverage in Olean.

Four Mile’s taproom hours are 4–10 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays, with expanded hours planned.

“Soon we will be announcing some tasting events at a few bars and restaurants around Olean,” said Piechota.
