Have you heard of the group painting social trend? People gather at a restaurant and are led in a painting class by an instructor. Everyone follows step-by-step, creating the same painting. Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC) Programs and Grants Manager Courtney Mealy was well aware of the trend and thought of a new twist on the theme. CCAC has a pottery studio, so why not try this concept with ceramics? And so “Sip and Sculpt” was born.
Mealy leads adult participants in creating functional ceramic pieces while enjoying a social atmosphere at the 100 West Main Street studio in Allegany. All the ceramic supplies are provided. Participants create a different project at each session – a candle holder (June 16), and a spoon rest (June 30). Participants do not need any experience working with clay, everything you need to know will be taught to you that evening. You can sign up at www.myartscouncil,net for the classes ($30 each).
On the softer side, working in fabric, artist Julie Mader will lead a class in creating one-of-a-kind hand painted silk scarves. In this one day class (June 19, from 10 a.m. to noon, $45 for members, $55 non-members), participants will focus on color theory and patterns, using dyes to embellish their scarf. The finished scarves will be washed and sent to participants later.
Two other upcoming CCAC classes that are perfect to do with friends are of the do-it-yourself (DIY) variety, but at CCAC an instructor is present who will guide you. DIY Website (June 13th from 3-5 p.m., $10 per person) is for those people who would like to have a website, but haven’t the training to work in more complex programs or the money to pay a website designer. Courtney Mealy will show you how to begin with the user friendly, free website, Weebly. Participants are asked to bring their own laptop so you can start creating a website right away!
The other do-it-yourself class is DIY Crate Table – two days, June 27 and 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., $150 per person). This project has been shown on the popular website Pinterest, but if you were reluctant to try it on your own, now you can work alongside an instructor. Patti Rosenswie will lead participants in creating this functional table using crates. All supplies will be provided and participants can choose to paint or stain their own finished table.
To sign up for one of these classes, the registration form and paypal payment option are on the CCAC website, www.myartscouncil.net. A completed registration form and pre-payment are required for all classes. Check payment is accepted, and can be sent to CCAC at P.O. Box 406, Olean, NY 14760 or dropped off at the studio at 100 West Main Street, Allegany.
