Farmers Markets Offer Just-Picked Freshness

There’s nothing like that first bite of a juicy, just-picked tomato, is there? From roadside stands to weekly farmers markets, the growing season offers an abundance of locally grown fruits, vegetables, flowers, baked goods, honey and maple products, cheese, artisanal baked goods, wine and beer, meat and poultry, and more.

Whether eaten out of hand, canned or frozen, anything freshly harvested is always the magic ingredient. When you support local agribusinesses, you are supporting the local economy and you’re rewarded with responsibly grown and produced fruits, vegetables and agricultural products that haven’t been shipped thousands of miles in refrigerated trucks. In addition, you get to meet the hardworking, knowledgeable people who’ve grown this food with pride and love.

To help you navigate the farmers markets and farm locations in the area, two new resources have been created to help you find the products you want in Cattaraugus, Allegany and Chautauqua counties and others in the greater region.

“From the Ground Up: Local Food in Allegany, Cattaraugus, & Chautauqua Counties” is a handy 50-page print publication with 100-plus family farm listings, farmers market locations, as well as roadside stands and regional food businesses. You’ll also find farm and farmer profiles, recipes and more.

The online version of this guide at www.FreshLocalWNY.org  is optimized for viewing on the go with your mobile device. The website is updated daily with news and event information. Check out the seasonal harvest chart to find out when certain vegetables and fruit are generally ready for harvest, and start your menu planning. You can also find the guide on Facebook at Fresh Local WNY.

Six farmers markets in Cattaraugus County distribute their products in convenient locations sprinkled around the county. See the pullout box wit this article.

Most markets accept cash and debit cards. You can also pay with benefits from the WIC Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (WC FMNP), Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SR FMNP), WIC Vegetables & Fruit Check Program (WIC VF), SNAP/Food Stamps/EBT (SNAP EBT), FreshConnect Checks Program (FCC) and DoubleUp Food Bucks (DUFB).

Very recently, the Cattaraugus County Department of Aging was awarded 800 Senior Farmers Market coupon booklets. Each booklet contains five $4 coupons that seniors can use to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets in Cattaraugus County.

There are only a few requirements. If you are over 60 years of age, have a single-person income of not more than $1,815 per month, or a two-person income of not more than $2,456, then you are eligible to receive a free coupon booklet (one per household).

The Department of Aging has been distributing these booklets at various sites across the county. For more details, or if you are an older adult with physical limitations that prevent you from picking up the booklet in person, please call the Department of the Aging/NY Connects at (716) 373-8032 or 1-800-462-2901.
