Third Annual Jefferson Street Cemetery Tour July 18

This Saturday, July 18, the Ellicottville Historical Society will present the third annual Jefferson Street Cemetery Tour and, according to Historical Society president and event organizer Dawn Westfall, visitors really have something to look forward to this year as 15 actors from the age of six and up will portray some of the individuals interred in this historic pioneer cemetery.

“People will be entertained as they learn about Ellicottville’s rich history and some of its past residents” she said.

The first tour was held in 2014 after the cemetery received National Register of Historic Places status and a multi-year restoration and preservation of the site was completed with the support of the Town of Ellicottville, the Ellicottville Historical Society and a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

“Now that the restoration work is done, the Historical Society wants to continue the annual tour as part of its mission to study, preserve and keep alive the spirit and tradition of Ellicottville’s heritage,” Westfall said.

Two tours will be scheduled for the day at 1 and 3 p.m. Parking is available on the Iskalo Development Corporation lot (former site of Signore Co.) across Jefferson Street (Rt. 219) from the cemetery. You may purchase tickets at the parking lot. Tickets are $10 per person; children 12 and under are free.

Police will be on hand to help you cross to the cemetery grounds where participants will be greeted by the actors in character.
