Take Me to the Movies!

By Alicia Dziak

Movie buffs unite! Whether you like your movies classic, brand new, indoors or out, there’s no shortage of amazing venues to check them out this summer.

Free? Yes please! Last year, thanks to money raised from Sally Marsh’s Hootenanny fundraisers, including last summer’s Smokey Bear’s 70th birthday celebration, donations were able to bring back an Allegany State Park tradition. Now park guests can enjoy free movies in the Quaker Amphitheater Friday nights throughout the summer. Upcoming movies, which start at 9 p.m., include Pollyanna on July 24 and The Shaggy Dog on Aug. 8.

Spending the night under the stars at a drive-in movie is a memory in the making. While this type of theater is not as popular as it once was, it’s still just as fun as you remember, and we’re lucky to have two drive-in theaters within a short drive of Ellicottville.

Delevan Twin Drive-In, located on Route 16 in Delevan, gives you lots of bang for your buck with its double features, and two screens give you even more options. Cost is $8 adults, $5 kids ages 5-12. For movies and showtimes, visit www.delevandrivein.net.

The Portville Drive-In, at 1060 Olean-Portville Road, boasts some of the largest drive-in screens in the state, as well as double features. Admission is $7 per person, $2 for children ages 11 and under. For movies and showtimes, visit www.portvilledrivein.com.

If it’s nostalgia you’re after, head to Springville’s Joylan Theater, located at 11 W Main Street. The arts and crafts style theater shows new releases at an affordable price (starting at $5 for matinees), and concessions are a bargain too. For movies and showtimes, visit www.joylantheatre.com.

Or, you can head south to the locally owned and operated Bradford Main Street Movie House, where new releases are played in 2 and 3D. For movies and showtimes, visit www.bradfordcinema.com.

If you have kids, chances are you’ll be headed to Darien Lake at least once this summer. If so, why not go on a day when they’re offering their new Dive-In movies? Watch your favorite hits on the large screen under the stars from the huge wave pool! Upcoming shows include Finding Nemo on July 31, and Frozen on Aug. 14.

Winding down with a good movie is the perfect ending to a long summer day. Sit back, relax and enjoy!
