IBO’s Grand Finale, Aug. 4-9

The “grand finale” of the International Bowhunting Organization’s (IBO) outdoor season will double as both a championship event and a time for shooters and their families to enjoy their summer. Set at Holiday Valley, Aug. 6-9, the IBO World Championship is the last event for the shooting season in an ideal vacation setting.

“This is our last event, where everyone comes together for a good time,” said IBO President Brian Marcum. “It’s a good time for the families to get together, take a vacation and really just enjoy the event.”

Marcum said the organization tries to make its final event different from the other tournaments throughout the year, making sure it’s “special.”

Because families usually use vacation time to attend the world championship, the organization typically looks at resort settings like Holiday Valley, which is “one of our shooters’ favorite locations,” Marcum said.

“The shooters look forward to coming to the resort each year and really enjoy the town of Ellicottville, with all the shops,” he added.

The competition course at Holiday Valley is another draw for shooters, Marcum said. Although it is mountainous, the terrain isn’t as tough as some of the other competitions, which helps to draw competitors from other countries.

With well over 1,500 shooters competing, Marcum said the event draws competitors from South Africa, Australia and, of course, Canada.

“It’s a lot of our normal demographic, but there are people from all over the world, so it’s good exposure,” Holiday Valley Inn Manager Katie DiDonato said. “We have seen IBO participants return for festivals or skiing. It’s not just [Holiday Valley], but all of Ellicottville too.”

In addition to giving the town and resort exposure, DiDonato said hosting the world championship also allows local shooters a chance to compete in something they wouldn’t ordinarily take part in, as Holiday Valley also hosts a concurrent Bowhunter’s Open.

New this year, Marcum said, is the addition of a children’s Three-Star Championship. The IBO partnered with the National Archery in Schools Program to introduce an outdoor event for younger shooters. Marcum expects more than 100 young shooters to compete for awards and scholarships.

“This is their outdoor world championship, too,” Marcum said of the children’s event. “They’re used to shooting inside … so to be outdoors in the elements is brand new, and I know a lot of them are looking forward to it.”

Both the adult and children’s courses are spread throughout Holiday Valley, HoliMont and onto state land adjacent to HoliMont, DiDonato said, which helps to avoid over-impact to any one area.

Because of the competition, both the hiking and biking trails will be closed from Aug. 3-9, “for obvious reasons,” she said.

And while the competition is getting closer, DiDonato said they’re still looking for volunteers to work the event. The check-in and check-out tents still need some volunteers, who will help to greet the shooters.

“It’s a lot of fun, and there is a lot of interaction with the shooters, who are great, friendly people,” DiDonato said.

Anyone interested in volunteering should call Donna Hallick at (716) 699-2345 ext. 4401 as soon as possible.
