Sunflower House Has Openings

As the beginning of the school year draws near, it’s time for Mom and Dad to make plans for childcare this fall. Fortunately for families in the Ellicottville area, Kristine Germain’s Sunflower House Family Day Care Center in Great Valley is expanding to accept up to 16 children, from infants to children up to twelve years old.

Germain, a licensed family daycare provider, has recently received her license as a group daycare center, which allows her to accommodate 16 children instead of eight, which is the cap for family daycare.

According to Germain, “The demand for childcare has been unbelievable since opening my business,” which she did earlier this year. “I have hired a fabulous assistant; therefore, I can take two more infants, plus a variety of other age groups. I currently have openings for 2, 3, and 4 year olds.”

Although Germain’s business is new to the area (it opened last year), Germain is far from new to the daycare business. She owned and operated her own daycare center in St. Mary’s, PA, and was the director of a daycare center in Buffalo before opening her center in Great Valley. In addition to more than 20 years of experience working with children, Germain’s credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, which informs her approach to her own daycare center, where she uses Lifeways, Reggio and Waldorf theories and practices.

Just one conversation with Germain proves her enthusiasm and passion for her work.

“My experience in daycare as a teacher, director, owner and mother has taught me the business from the ground up,” explained Germain, and is a large part of her decision to keep her business on a smaller scale, as opposed to opening a large day care center. Although the demand for high-quality childcare is great, Germain explains, “I would rather impact the lives of those few than try to rush through the day caring for too many. It’s about quality, not quantity.”

Sunflower House Family Day Care Center is located at 5882 Brewer Road in Great Valley. To accommodate parents’ needs, Germain’s center is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. year ‘round.
