Cattaraugus County Undersheriff William (Bill) Nichols, who is being treated for leukemia at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, has been at the hospital since his June 10 bone marrow transplant. Taking the lead from Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb, who shaved his head after visiting his colleague in the hospital on August 9, some 50 of Nichols’ colleagues, men and women alike, shaved their heads to “express their commitment of support.”
The photo above and the story of the department’s actions has gotten tremendous local, regional and national attention. Today.com ran the story on Aug. 17 as word spread.
The department also collected donations to the hospital in Nichols’ name.
