By Todd Palmatier
The Franklinville-Ellicottville Titans started the Section 6 Class D championship game with a small hiccup as they fumbled the opening kickoff at their own 43 yard line, but their stout defense stopped the Frewsburg Bears to three and out and the Titans never looked back as they marched to a 34-7 win.
The Titans scored with 7:48 to go in the 1st quarter as Caleb Rinko raced to a 25 yard touchdown run and the extra point failed. Rinko again answered with an 11-yard run with 1:48 remaining to put the Titans up 12-0 at the end of the 1st.
The Bears got back in the game in the beginning of the 2nd quarter as Brady Coliver punched in a 1-yard quarterback keeper to make the score 12-7. The Titans and Bears went back and forth until the Titans scored on an eight-yard pass from QB Tommy “Touchdown” Easton to Dooley Brennan, with a Jonas Hurlburt 2 pt conversion to make the score 20-7.
The Titans kept up the scoring into the 4th quarter as Easton called his own number on a 44-yard keeper that he marched into the end zone and then tossed a 2 point conversion to Brennan to make the score 28-7. The Titans rounded out the scoring as Austin Whitmer ran in a 15-yard run to complete the scoring.
Rinko led the offensive rushing charge with 107 yards on 16 carries, Easton had 85 yards rushing on seven carries and was 5-8 for 31 yards in the passing department with one TD pass.
The Titans defense was led by Austin Grinols, who recorded two key interceptions and had key tackles to slow the Bears offense to a halt. Preston Hutchison had five tackles and four assists to key the Titans.
The Titans play Bishop Kearney in the Far Western Regional Class D Championships on Saturday, Nov. 14 at noon at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester.
