Rise to the Challenge at HoliMont March 5

On your mark, get set, go…to this weekend’s Phoenix Rise to the Challenge Race at HoliMont! For many, the highlight of the adaptive ski season is this race, happening on March 5.

David Berghash, Phoenix Program director, noted that, outside of the Special Olympics, “There aren’t a lot of adaptive ski races in the area or in the country. That’s why this race draws so many people.”

Racers come from near and far to attend—and what started out as a club race now pulls in racers from not only HoliMont, but also from other local ski resorts, as well as neighboring states and Canada.

As in years past, racers compete in one of four categories: beginner, novice, semi-novice and expert. During their personal-best race, competitors take a run, establish a time and then strive to improve upon that time during the second run. With about 60 racers signed up, that means an action-packed event—about 60 races times two runs each.

Level 1 races begin around 9 a.m., and lead up to the Level 4 (more advanced) races, with the last race of the day around 1 p.m.
