Earth Day- April 22nd…Arbor Day- April 29th… Two events that celebrate two things we couldn’t live without!
This year, Allegany State Park combines both these events into one celebration! This family-friendly event takes place on Saturday, April 16 from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at the Red House Administration building.
The fun kicks at 10 a.m. with a two-hour guided Tree I.D./Trivia hike on Red Jacket Trail. (This is also our first 3rd Saturday Trek of the year.)
Kids activities run from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will feature Sun Painting –weather permitting. This particular activity will run from 11 a.m. 12 p.m. Bring a t-shirt to paint, or we will have bandanas available for a $1 donation. Sun painted items will be ready to take home around 1:30 p.m. Kids can also participate in making Tree Part Art, clay ornaments, and more! Then bring your competitive side as we will play Earth Day Jeopardy from 12:30-1 p.m. Rounding out the day will be two guest speakers from 1 -2 p.m. in the Red House Museum. At 1 p.m., Nan Miller – Master Gardener will do a demonstration on “Cool Weather Gardening in a Shoebox”. At 1:30 p.m., Adele Wellman, Park Naturalist, will lead a nature hike called “Salamanders Don’t Litter”.
Ongoing during this event, participants can test their skills at Nature Trivia and check out displays on the Sugar Maple –New York State’s official tree and Recycling. Event attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch to enjoy in the park.
