It’s May, which means lots to do in New York’s largest state park, Allegany State Park (ASP). On Saturday, May 7 alone, there are two notable annual events happening in the park—the Allegany Adventure Run and I Love My Park Day.
Hit the trails at the annual Allegany Adventure Run. The race lets competitors choose from 6K, 13K and 27K distances, all leading through the rolling hills of the Art Roscoe Trail system, featuring wide, multi-use trails deep in the Allegheny National Forest that consist of mainly non-technical multi-use trails for mountain biking, hiking and running.
All races start/finish near the Summit area inside the Red House section of the park.
The 6K, with a 10 a.m. start, is a fun, slightly hilly trek around Sweetwater Trail.
The 13K, starting at 9:45 a.m. encompasses Sweetwater, Christian Hollow and Leonard Run.
The new 27K, starting at 9:30 a.m., follows the same starting route as the 13K, followed by a trek down Ridge run and the new Thunder Run single track trail, up Patterson for the two-mile climbing finish.
Course markings direct runners on all distances and marshals will be posted at certain intersections. Water stations will be located roughly at miles 1.5, 5, 7.5 and 13.
The Adventure Run is a rain or shine event, featuring a canopy of trees throughout the trail system that supports our rain/shine policy and kicks off the trail running season for those willing to accept the challenge. Race day registration and packet pickup starts at 8 a.m. at the Summit Ski Lodge.
Following the race, there will be a post-race lunch, snacks and great door prizes from our amazing sponsors.
Awards will be given for Overall Male, Female and Masters for each distance. Medals will be awarded to the top three in 10-year age groups for all distances. In addition the first 300 participants receive 2016 finishers pins.
The Allegany Adventure Run helps support the Allegany Nordic Ski Patrol and the local Volunteer Fire Company.
While online registration is now closed, race day registration is available. Stop into the Summit Warming Hut starting at 8 a.m. and get in on the fun, breathe in some fresh air, get your workout in, and enjoy an action-packed day at the park! More info at www.heartrateup.com.
May 7 is also your chance to show ASP some love by participating in the annual “I Love My Park Day,” a state-wide event where volunteers give back by helping with various park improvement projects in the park. This event, sponsored by State Parks and Parks and Trails New York, will be spearheaded by The Friends of Allegany State Park in cooperation with park staff.
This year’s event will be held in the Quaker Area. Volunteer projects will focus mainly on cabin trail clean up, with some other small site improvement projects, such as gardening, painting and minor repairs.
Check in/registration on May 7 is from 9-10 a.m. at the Quaker Picnic Shelter. Projects will be worked on from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Volunteers are asked to bring a snack, dress for the weather and prepare to get dirty.
A volunteer picnic afterward at the Quaker Picnic Shelter will be offered for a nominal fee. Interested participants should pre-register for I Love My Park Day at www.ptny.org/ilovemypark. For more information, contact the Allegany State Park Recreation Department at (716) 354-9101 ext. 236.
