Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce has connected with Seabirds International to bring two kayak sessions to the Olean area. Seabirds work in partnership with other organizations to make kayaking and canoeing a safe and enjoyable pastime. Seabirds International aims to make your paddling experience one to remember.
The two sessions, Strokes and Maneuvers Refinement and Kayak Safety and Rescue, will be held Saturday, Sept. 3. The venue (subject to change due to weather conditions) will be Linn Launch, Steam Valley Road, Portville, NY.
The Strokes and Maneuvers Refinement will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Can you paddle forward, backward and make your boat ‘slip’ sideways? Do you edge your boat while you are paddling? Can you turn your boat using a bow rudder? If you answered no to any of these, join us for this course to help you improve your paddling skills.
Kayak Safety and Rescue will be held 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Do you kayak alone? Are you able to get back into your boat unassisted? Do you paddle with friends? Have you practiced rescuing each other? Do you know how to swim with your boat in the event you aren’t able to ‘self rescue’? If you answered no to any of the questions then this is a course for you!
You will gain confidence in your rescue techniques as you learn: wet exits and cowboy rescue- aka self rescue; Eskimo bow and paddle rescues; contact tow, towing with towlines, boat over boat rescues; and how to swim with our boats and back deck rescues. This course is designed for people with basic paddling skills, i.e. can paddle forward, backward and side-to-side.
The cost is $80 (a $150 value). Spaces limited to four per session, book early to avoid disappointment, firstname.lastname@example.org Participants will receive an ACA participation card which can be shown for kayak activities requiring these skills.
For those participating, please bring boat personal gear and equipment, spare change of clothing & towel for after the session, and drink/ refreshments/ high-energy snack. This is a wet session and you will be in the water. Please fill out paperwork on the website for the session (waiver, health and fitness, photo release, etc.) The paperwork can be found online at http://www.seabirds.co/courses.html.
