Race to the Finish Local Runs in May and June

After last weekend’s Happy Half at Holiday Valley and Adventure Run at Allegany State Park, the spring race season is now officially underway. No matter what distance you prefer to run, there’s a race for everyone this spring and summer.

May 14, Kelly Tough 12K and 1.2K Fun Run

On Saturday, May 14, runners and walkers from around Western New York and beyond will join Pro Football Hall of Fame Member and former Buffalo Bills Quarterback Jim Kelly and his family and friends for the second annual Kelly Tough 12K. The event, which benefits the Hunter’s Hope Foundation, will begin at 9 a.m. on Jim Kelly Boulevard, near Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park. All proceeds help further the Foundation’s mission to find a cure for Krabbe Disease and other Leuko-dystrophies, support families affected by these diseases and advocate for Expanded Newborn Screening so that all babies have a fair chance at a healthy life from the start. May 22, Grinder Trail Run

On Sunday, May 22, at 10 a.m., join other trail runners for this 3.5-mile Trail Run in the heavily wooded and serene trails of Sprague Brook Park. A variety of trail sections, including single track trail, short climbs and descents, hardpack gravel, creekside and creek sections, promise a fun and challenging day of competition for any level runner. Meet at the Sprague Brook Park Casino. The post-race party features awards, great food and drink, door prizes and a free kids race. Proceeds help support East Concord Vol. Fire Dept. May 24-June 28, Dirt Devil Trail Series

Head back to Sprague Brook Park for the Dirt Devil Trail Series, trail running from 3 to 3.5 miles in which your best four out of the six count toward the series awards competition. Registration opens at 5:30 p.m. Enter the park then follow the Dirt Devil signs to the start line for each of the trail runs. Trail runs are scheduled for May 24, May 31, June 7, June 14, June 21 and June 28. Awards will be given in 10-year age groups. Race proceeds help support HEART Animal Shelters. May 29, Bemus Point 5K

Head to the Village Park at 1 Lakeside D, in Bemus Point, NY, for this scenic sunset run, beginning at 7 p.m. Enjoy the post-race party afterwards.

June 16, 10K Trail Run

Sprague Brook will host a 10K Trail Run, starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 16.  Join friends on the scenic one-loop trail course. $10 entry fee. Post race party with snacks and other refreshments. Visit heartrateup.com for more info.

June 18, Holiday Valley Mudslide Race

On June 18, Holiday Valley hosts everyone’s favorite obstacle run, the Mudslide Race. The fifth annual event is a mud run that’s outrageously fun. Choose from 3.5 or 5.4 mile courses and get down and dirty as you navigate 11 obstacles, starting at the top of Spruce and ending with the famous mudslide down the bottom of the Yodeler slope.  More info at holidayvalley.com.
