Fireworks Fun and Safety

Fireworks can be fun, but they also can be dangerous. Most fireworks are illegal to purchase in New York, however Cattaraugus County now permits the purchase of certain sparkling devices, such as wooden sparklers (but not metal) and sparkling fountains, by individuals 18 and older.

Before buying and lighting fireworks, read these safety tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety.

• Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.

• Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting.

• A responsible adult should supervise all firework activities.  Never give fireworks to children.
