Get out of the house and come join in the fun as Allegany State Park continues its series of hikes called “3rd Saturday Treks.”

As the name implies, these free, family-friendly hikes will take place on the 3rd Saturday of each month from April through October. The treks will be led by park staff, members of the Allegany State Park Friends Group, or Historical Society members and each will focus on a different area of the park.

This month’s 3rd Saturday Trek will take place on Aug. 20. Participants will be taken on an Interpretative hike into the Tornado Blowdown Area in Allegany State Park. The hike is on a relatively easy hiking trail measuring approximately one mile. The hike will highlight the path of a devastating 1990 tornado and the process of the cleanup of the blowdown. The park naturalist will also share information about forest succession and the flora and fauna of the area.

Attendees are asked to meet at the Tornado Blowdown parking lot (program site 68), located on ASP Rt. 1near Quaker Area, at 10 a.m., and to come dressed ready to hike and for the weather.

Each hike will last approximately two hours. Registration is not required. For more information, visit the Allegany State Park Facebook page or contact Katie Vecellio at (716) 354-9101 ext. 236 or katie.vecellio@parks.ny.gov.
