Lady Eagles Soar Again At CLV Volleyball Tourney

By Indrek Kongats

On Saturday, Oct. 15, the Ellicottville JV Volleyball team made its all the way to the championship game at the Cattaraugus-Little Valley Volleyball Tournament, losing in a tie breaker to the Southwestern Trojans from Jamestown, NY.

The JV squad started the morning off slowly, losing close battles in their first four games against Catt Little Valley (CLV) and Southwestern before handily winning their final four round robin matches against Dunkirk and Forestville. Southwestern placed first in the round robin competition, dropping only one game against second place finishers CLV. Ellicottville ended up third, setting up their semifinal game against CLV.

Strong team play earned Ellicottville the semifinal victory over CLV and a place in the final against the powerful Southwestern Trojans. Earlier the matchup between the two resulted in the Trojans narrowly pulling out a victory with a 27-25 score, a good indication of what was to be expected in the championship. The fans weren’t disappointed as the first two games were split. The third and deciding tie breaker game was a nail biting seesaw battle before Southwestern finally pulled away, winning 15-10 to claim the title.

In varsity action, Southwestern won the title match against Cattaraugus Little Valley. In the round robin leading up to the playoffs, Ellicottville ended up second behind Southwestern while CLV was third. The Varsity Eagles lost to CLV in the semi-finals, the reverse of what happened in the JV finals.

This week wrapped up all regular season league games for both the Varsity and JV teams against Portville on Tuesday night and Randolph on Thursday. Playoffs will begin next week for Class D Section VI.

Earlier in the week, the Ellicottville volleyball teams hosted a fund raising event Thursday night against CLV. The evening was a huge success with a great fan turn out to raise funds for young Alex Newark, an 11-year-old Ellicottville student-athlete struggling with Osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
