Winter Sunset Treks
Join us every Monday evening at 4:30 p.m. in January and February for a trek into the sunset at Allegany State Park. Beginning January 2nd, park Naturalist will lead interpretive snow shoe treks, weather depending, or hikes along the summit ridgeline on Bear Paw Trail. Witness a breath taking winter sunset at Stone Tower, then make your way back to the Summit Warming Hut for an after trek social. The 2.3 mile trail is easy-moderate with some slight elevation changes. Be sure to dress for the weather, bring a flashlight, snack, and a sense of adventure. Trek dates will be as follows; January 2, January 9, January 16, January 23, January30, February 6, February 13, February 20, and February 27. 1st Day Hike Jan. 1
On January 1, 2017, Allegany’s 1st Day Hike offers a healthy way for people of all ages to get outside and enjoy the winter beauty of the area. This self-guided hike will take place in the Summit Area in the Red House side of the park. The off-trail hike, approximately 2 miles in length and easy to moderate in intensity, begins at the Summit Warming Hut, follows scenic ridgeline to Stone Tower, then loops back to the Warming Hut. Interpretive points of interest can be found along the way. Come listen to birds, feel the warmth of the sun or the coldness of the snow. This 1st Day Hike will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants should begin the hike by stopping in the Summit Warming Hut to sign in and pick up a trail map. Be sure to dress in appropriate winter hiking apparel. Weather permitting, snowshoes and trekking poles are encouraged. After the hike, be sure to swing back in the warming hut for a New Year’s Social with chili and warm beverages provided by the Friends of Allegany State Park. Looking for something to do on a chilly evening this fall and winter? Get out of the house and warm yourself by fireside as Allegany State Park presents “By the Fireside,” a free music series. Performances will take place once a month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Red House Administration Building lobby, November through March -performers and dates to be announced. The fireplaces will be blazing and great music will be playing. What an enjoyable way to wile away some of our colder months! Art Roscoe Loppet Feb. 12
The Annual Art Roscoe XC Ski Weekend is tearing into Allegany State Park for another amazing year of cross-country skiing action! On Sunday, February 12, 2017, join us on one of our three different course distances, 6K, 13K, and 22K, to experience the almost endless thrill and heart-pounding action of the Art Roscoe Trail System in the Summit Area on the Red House side of ASP. Pre-register to guarantee your place on the starting line or come down on race day to register. Registration and check in opens at 8:00a.m. at the Summit Ski Area – Central Cabin.
