With winter in full swing and the ski slopes in top notch condition, the Ellicottville Central School Ski Team is in quest of their own “Holy Grail”— a possible State Championship. The team is coached by Kelly Fredrickson and includes team members senior Victor Rieman, juniors Jesse Both and Lucas Foster, freshman Adrian Deorbe and middle school students Hayly Fredrickson, Logan Fredrickson, Orry Shattenburg, CeCe Karls.

The team competes against the Williamsville School District and Gow, a private school, training three nights per week and calling Holiday Valley home.

The team competed this past Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Holiday Valley for Slalom, and will compete again next week on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at the Buffalo Ski Club. Their final Section VI race will be on Wednesday, Feb. 15 back at Holiday Valley.

Based on results from the six races this past season, Section VI will have six girls and six boys qualify for NYSPHSAA State championships at Bristol Mountain Ski Resort on Monday, Feb. 27 and Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Historically, ECS has done well at the NYSPHSAA State Championships. Last year at Whiteface, the girls captured 5th place, with the boys placing 8th.

There are eight sections competing and the combined score for the two-day competition determines the boys and girls team overall winners. The combined score for an individual determines the individual boys and girls champion as well.

Last season, Ellicottville’s girls’ team member Hayly Fredrickson finished 15th in Slalom and Logan  Fredrickson finished 18th. For the boys, Orry Shattenburg placed 27th, Jesse Both place 39th and Victor Rieman placed 41st. Shattenburg also competed in Giant Slalom and placed 42nd ,while Jesse Both placed 44th in GS. Logan and Hayly Fredrickson placed 46 and 47 respectively for the girls in GS. In 2015, both teams placed 7th.

Make sure you ome out to cheer on the team at Holiday Valley on Wednesday, Feb. 15 and send them off with your support to the States!
