Mangan Takes Gold at Francis Piche Championship

Athletes from seven states gathered for the annual Francis Piche Invitational Championship, a Giant Slalom race, at Gunstock Mountain in Gilford, NH. Only the best U12 athletes attend this race and it is the farthest an athlete can go on the East Coast.

HoliMont’s Mary Catherine Mangan took gold at this prestigious race. Just off the podium was teammate Madalyn Cummings in 4th place. Alexandra Smillie of Holiday Valley finished in an impressive 27th place after starting in the 70th position. Claire Rintoul of HoliMont ended her season with a 41st place. All four of these ladies had a fabulous season and we will be eager to see their results as they move up to U14s next season. Sydney Hendriks of HoliMont placed 56th for the U14 women.

On the men’s side, HoliMont’s Cameron Johnson also found himself on the podium with the bronze medal. Erik Shattenberg of Holiday Valley just missed the top ten with an 11th place finish.

Day two at Gunstock Mountain was the Paul Ladouceur Slalom and the first time that U12s see tall pole slalom. Generally, U12 athletes ski smaller gates for slalom commonly referred to as “stubbies”. Madalyn Cummings (HO) cracked the top ten with a 7th place finish. Mary Catherine Mangan (HO) took 11th and Claire Rintoul (HO) 47th. For the men, Erick Shattenberg (HV) took 13th.

U21/U19 athletes traveled to Gore Mountain in North Creek, NY for their U19 Eastern Championships. Day one consisted of a Super-G. Nathan Briselden of Holiday Valley finished on the podium 3rd place. Teammate Sean Nolan took 12th!

Day Two was a Giant Slalom. Unfortunately, both Briselden and Nolan crashed their first run.

The final day of competition was a Slalom. Sean Nolan (HV) finished in 29th while Briselden again crashed in the first run.

The Ronnie Berlack U16 Eastern Championship Grand Prix sponsored by Nordica was held at Stowe Mountain in Stowe, VT. Alec Nolan of Holiday Valley finished in 47th on day one’s Super-G. HoliMont’s Carlo Muscarella took 50th. Holiday Valley’s Katherine Wojnowski finished 28th with teammates Logans Fredrickson, Candice Kasahara and Hayly Fredrickson finishing 31st, 35th and 59th respectively.

Day Two was a Giant Slalom, Alec Nolan (HV) finished 42nd while Carlo Muscarella (HO) unfortunately crashed his first run. Logan Fredrickson (HV) took 30th, Candice Kasahara (HV) 35th, Katherine Wojnowski (HV) 44th and Hayly Fredrickson (HV) 45th.

The third day was a Slalom event and Nolan took 36th and Muscarella crashed again. Hayly Fredrickson had her best result so far of the series with a 40th place.

The final day of competition was another Slalom and Muscarella broke his streak finishing in an impressive 26th place while Nolan took 41st. Logan Fredrickson finished 42nd and Hayly Fredrickson took 44th.

Some U16 athletes headed to Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, VT for the USSA Eastern Finals. Day one was a Super-G where Holiday Valley’s Lauren Thomas found herself on the podium in 3rd place! Teammate Sierra Cappelli took 22nd.

Day two was another Super-G and Thomas again found herself on the podium but this time with the gold medal and Sierra Cappelli finished 21st.

Day three was a Giant Slalom. Thomas finished 9th, Kate Masliwec (HO) 27th and Cappelli placed 28th.

The final day of competition was a Slalom Thomas, Masliwec and Cappelli each took 24th, 28th and 29th respectively.

The only U14 from HoliMont or Holiday Valley to move on the Eastern Championships was Alexander Wojnowski of Holiday Valley. This series was held at Sunday River Ski Resort in Sunday River, ME.

Day one was a Super-G, Wojnowski finished 43rd.

Day Two was a Giant Slalom where Wojnowski placed 38th.

Day three of competition was a Slalom where Wojnowski cracked the top twenty with a 16th place.

These races bring an end to the 2016-2017 Junior Alpine Ski Racing Season for Holiday Valley and HoliMont athletes. It was a great season— you all worked so hard!
