Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival Sept. 22-24

The first faceoff of the Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival will be upon us Sept. 22- 24. The fields will be set and teams will descend on our area, ready for a weekend of one of the fastest growing sports in the country.

The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce and Rhino Lacrosse have been working together since December 2016 to make this first-year event a reality. With everything in place, the first-year tournament looks to not only be a great experience for players and families but spectators as well.

“We are extremely excited for the inaugural Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival in a few weeks,” Co-director Ryan Powell said. “Mike (Riorden) and I have many years of experience in the sport traveling to countless lacrosse tournaments both as players and coaches. Our belief is that lacrosse tournaments should happen in the coolest smalls towns in America. This makes Ellicottville the perfect setting to showcase our beautiful sport!”

Riorden is in total agreement, saying, “For over 40 years, I’ve traveled to lacrosse tournaments all over the US and Canada and the best times I’ve had have always been when the town hosting the tournament has the ability to have teams, players and families bond both on and off the field. Ryan and I can’t wait to introduce the Ellicottville area to lacrosse and, more importantly, introduce lacrosse to Ellicottville.  We can’t think of a better location to celebrate the game we all love.”

The Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival is the perfect place to check out a game that our area is only just starting to get to know, on a larger scale. While our neighbors in the Seneca Nation have had the game since its inception, calling it The Creator’s Game, lacrosse has become known as the fastest game on two feet. The combination of speed, athleticism, teamwork, and finesse that many other sports have is mixed with a skillful handling of the stick, making it something to see.

“Several years ago, the Chamber began to focus some of our marketing dollars on outdoor adventure activities and it has paid off,” Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Brian McFadden, said. “We are now seeing more and more visitors on the hills, in the lakes and enjoying our many other outdoor attractions. Adding the Lacrosse tournament is just one more notch in our collective belts. No wonder USA Today calls Ellicottville ‘an outdoor lovers paradise’.”

Games will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all weekend. Jump from field to field as you see fit. There is no admission fee to any of the games. Make sure to check out the vendor village for your tournament apparel, music, games, and food.

All games will be played either at the Ellicottville Central School athletic field complex or at the Village Park. Come experience the Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival, Sept. 22-24.
