The Ellicottville Memorial Library will again participate in the annual National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Program which aims to broaden our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The Big Read this year features Louise Erdich’s book entitled The Round House. We currently have 10 copies of the book at Ellicottville Library available for checkout. In addition The Round House will be available in the eBook and downloadable audiobook format in our OverDrive collection with unlimited usage from March 1, 2018 through April 30, 2018. So if you are a digital fan, check this out and be guaranteed a copy with no waiting!
Also, in recognition of this event, come join us on May 2nd at 2 pm for two very special presentations. The first will be Marilyn Anderson, a descendent of Mary Jemison. Come hear about the life and times of Mary Jemison, an American frontierswoman who was taken from her family and adopted in her teens by the Seneca. Then at 2:30 we will have a presentation by Janet Wahlberg. She will discuss the Native American Code Talkers who served in WWI and WWII. Learn about their willingness to serve and the incredible work that went into the CODE. In addition, learn about their culture and how our country has finally recognized them.
Afterwards, there will be time for questions and to speak one on one with the presenters. Refreshments will be served and door prizes awarded!
