Originally scheduled for a home game Tuesday night, instead, the Ellicottville boys team hit the road to take part in the opening of Southwestern’s new gymnasium.

The Trojans (2-1) celebrated the first game in their new gym by winning the non-league game, 61-51.

Alex Card and Mitchell Pascarella each scored 16 points for the victors and Cooper Pannes and Mason Mathews each added 11.

Clayton Rowland had a game-high 20 points for Ellicottville (1-2) while Leif Jimerson added 13.

“It’s a beautiful gym,” Ellicottville coach Dave McCann said. “They called and asked if we could switch sites and we agreed. It’s nice to be part of the opening of a new facility.”

SALAMANCA TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT

SALAMANCA — Ellicottville bounced back from a Nov. 30 loss to Clymer by jumping out to a 39-17 halftime lead en route to defeating Cattaraugus-Little Valley (0-2).

Leif Jimerson hit a pair of three-pointers and led the Eagles with 18 points along with five steals and five assists. Clayton Rowland added 17 points, seven boards and five assists and Wyatt Chudy had 15 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Steven Rowland scored 10 points.

Nick Burroughs led the Timberwolves with 12 points.

“I thought we got out in transition and were able to run a little bit tonight,” Eagles coach Dave McCann said, “which kind of plays to our strength in a lot of cases, just getting the ball up the court quick and being able to find some open spaces. I thought we defended fairly well throughout most of the night and that was able to get us into some quick, easy baskets to get us going on offense.”

The Eagles split the opening weekend after a 70-57 loss to Clymer on Friday.

“Every game’s going to be a learning experience for us,” McCann said of his young team. “We learned to deal with some adversity (Friday) night foul-wise, kind of moved on from it today and I thought the kids bounced back well.”

SALAMANCA — Contrary to the final score, a new-look Ellicottville squad made this a competitive game … for three quarters.

Coach Dave McCann’s Eagles, who are replacing four starters including Big 30 All-Stars Elliot Bowen and Griffin Chudy, trailed Clymer by 11 at halftime of their season opener in the Salamanca Tip-Off Tournament. Ellicottville cut the lead to two entering the fourth quarter and took a lead on the first possession, but couldn’t keep up to finish the game.

“We had a rough first half, we turned the ball over 13 times in the first half,” McCann said. “We really battled back in the third and we took the lead to start the fourth quarter. But it just seemed every time we made a shot, Clymer came back and answered.

“We got in a situation with some foul trouble. It seemed every time we would get it close, they would hit a big shot or we would get a foul. It’s just some things an inexperienced team will do.”

Leif Jimerson paced Ellicottville with 20 points and Wyatt Chudy posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Clayton Rowland added 13 points and nine boards.

For Clymer, Lucas Willink scored 20 points, Hunter Wassink added 17 and Zavon Overton had 13.
