Led by Smith, ECS girls pull away in second to beat CLV

League play appears to suit the Ellicottville girls basketball team well.

The Eagles improved to 4-1 in the CCAA East II division on Monday, handing Cattaraugus-Little Valley a 57-32 loss at “The Ward” gymnasium. Also Ellicottville’s fifth win in its last six contests, Monday’s game lifted the Eagles over .500 (6-5) for the first time this season.

The crucial stretch came in the second quarter when the Eagles, then leading 15-13, scored the last 15 points of the half for a 30-13 lead. Ellicottville added to its advantage with a 6-0 start to the second half for a 21-0 total run.

Junior guard Makenna Smith knocked down four three-pointers on the way to a season-high 22 points to lead Ellicottville. Smith also led the Eagles with five steals.

Freshman Emilee Ruiz added nine points with five rebounds and a team-high five assists.

Evelyn Nuzzo, Sierra Maybee and Megan Chapman also had five rebounds each.

Alex Minnekine led Cattaraugus-Little Valley (6-5) with 7 points.

 Linnea Jimerson shook off some foul trouble to score nine of her 17 points in the fourth quarter Thursday, leading Ellicottville (5-5, 3-1) to a league victory.

Jimerson also led the Eagles in rebounds (13) and steals (5). Makenna Smith added 12 points on a pair of three-pointers and Camryn Early had seven rebounds for Ellicottville.

Katelyn Miller led Pine Valley (2-7, 0-3) with 17 points and five rebounds, and Lyric Westland pulled down six boards.

The Panthers led by one at halftime and trailed by two entering the fourth.

“It was close the whole way,” Pine Valley coach Mark Mansfield said. “We got Jimerson in foul trouble, so things were going the way we wanted to but she had a big fourth quarter. 

“We did a nice job on her right up until the end. They’re a good, solid team.”
