Michael Warsaw had two hits as North Collins broke a 3-3 tie with a run in its final at-bats Monday to defeat the Ellicottville baseball team, 4-3, at North Collins.
Tyler Mathis and Christian Loretto combined to strike out nine while surrendering five hits for the Eagles in the CCAA East II game. Lucas Marsh, who had an RBI single, allowed five hits in a complete-game effort for Ellicottville, but the Eagles were hampered by nine errors.
“Lucas threw well enough (to win), but we didn’t support him defensively today,” Ellicottville coach Chris Mendell said. “We had bases loaded in the third and seventh innings, and couldn’t capitalize there, but the difference was the errors. Hopefully, we can right the ship before playoffs.”
Ryan DeKay had two hits and Steven Rowland had a double for Ellicottville (5-10), which opens the playoffs on Friday at Chautauqua Lake.
Pine Valley 12, Ellicottville 3
Corey Ellis pitched into the sixth inning, racking up 10 strikeouts with three walks, and Kevin Hunt went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs to propel Pine Valley Saturday in South Dayton.
Sam Hunt and Brennan Sercu added two hits each for the Panthers, who led 5-3 before putting up seven runs in the sixth.
“Corey Ellis was in full control of the game,” Ellicottville coach Chris Mendell said. “We just couldn’t solve him today, and we didn’t play our best defensive game behind Ryan (DeKay, committing four errors).”
Steven Rowland had a two-run double and Harrison Newark an RBI single for the Eagles.
Frewsburg 5, Ellicottville 4
Ellicottville’s Lucas Marsh was in line for the win May 17 in Frewsburg after he led off the seventh with a triple and scored the go-ahead run on a Clayton Rowland single. But Frewsburg had an answer.
Marsh exited after reaching his pitch count, and the Bears scored the tying run on a passed ball and game-winner on Nolan Brink’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
Aaron Hair (RBI) and Jason Dustin each had two hits, including a double, for Frewsburg.
Kalib Pierce was 2-for-3 with an RBI double for Ellicottville.
