The third annual “Elisa’s Run for the Arts” 5K event to benefit the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship for the Arts will take place on Saturday, June 8.
The free registration begins at 9 a.m. at the gazebo on Washington and Jefferson streets, from where the run will start at 10 a.m. and end after participants complete the route.
The 5K route goes along Elizabeth Street to Mechanic Street, then Maples Road to Northwood Drive and returning to the gazebo. The event is open to everyone.
The run/walk is in memory of Elisa Hughey who lost her battle with cancer in June 2016. Hughey appreciated all aspects of the arts and was an accomplished artist with both a Masters in Art Education from Buffalo State University and a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Buffalo.
The scholarships are awarded to a college-bound student committed to advancing their skills in any aspect of the fine arts including painting, drawing, watercolor, graphics, architecture/design and photography, with preference to students seeking a higher education specific to those goals.
A quote from the organization’s website says, “Our vision is to hold an annual celebration and fun run to honor Elisa. We want to remember and embrace her spirit, her athleticism, her artistry, and her love of friends and family… and to raise money for local art students and give them a boost forward as they move into the world.”
There will be hats for sale and prizes for the top finishers. Local businesses have generously donated great items, which will be raffled during the Community Party at Dina’s Restaurant, 15 Washington St., from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening.
All proceeds support the Elisa B. Hughey Scholarship for the Arts. Donations are gratefully accepted.
