Winery of Ellicottville adds new porch for outdoor wine experience

By Deb Everts

With a new second story porch and two new hard ciders out this summer, The Winery of Ellicottville keeps getting bigger and better.

Owners Sam and Bethany Sheehy welcome wine lovers to their establishment that is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this month.

Looking back on those 10 years, Bethany said the week before they opened, in July 2009, they took the front half of the building off and added the second story, so the front half is all new. Then, in the past two years, they put in all new displays.

The completely renovated space includes a charming tasting room featuring a handcrafted bar, a tank room that houses eight stainless steel wine tanks and 20 oak barrels, as well as a beautifully appointed conference room/private event space that is available for rent and a porch on the second story.

“The tasting room just gets more and more crowded as we purchase more and more tanks due to the demand of the wine,” she said.

According to Bethany, the new second story porch was added on in early May and customers have been enjoying it since the warm weather has arrived. The porch extends the full width of the building and comfortably accommodates 20-25 people, making it the perfect space for small gatherings.

“The summer months are so short that we wanted to create the most square-footage for our customers to enjoy wine by the glass while they sit and take some time to relax,” she said.

Bethany said the porch is still a work in progress, and there are a few finishing touches left to do yet. She said the posts on the first floor are going to be wrapped in the same wood that is upstairs, and some door casings on the second floor need to be finished.

Located at 14 Monroe St., the winery offers over 20 varieties of award-winning wine made from locally-grown grapes and berries, right where it is crafted on the premises. Bethany said they recently brought back a new vintage of their Berry Hard Cider, which is apple-based with blueberry and raspberry wine added.

“It’s very popular and very refreshing with lots of bubbles. It makes a nice gift,” she said. “We have a new Blood Orange Cider coming out this summer.”

Visitors can book a Taste and Tour combo or ask for a peek behind the curtain during their visit if they’d like to have a look around. In the tasting room, they’ll find a full-service wine bar.

Depending on the season and availability, people will be able to choose from 18 or more varieties to sample and enjoy, or to bring home. Wine is sold by the glass and by the bottle, and the winery features tasting packages that are geared for wine enthusiasts and novices alike.

Enjoy an intimate wine tasting experience with a selection from the “small plates” menu that is available daily. The winery also offers a Chocolate Pairing where they pair their wines with Watson’s Chocolates.

A great perk that lasts all year long is the Wine Club that allows members to be among the first to taste new releases and receive special offerings.

The winery is open seven days a week. Hours are Monday through Thursday, noon to 7 p.m.; Friday, noon to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
