Ellicottville school board discusses Section VI sports

By Ginna Hensel

The Ellicottville Central School Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting Nov. 19 with the meeting beginning with a special presentation from Timm Slade, Executive Director of Section VI. Slade attended the board meeting to clarify any questions Ellicottville board members had about Section VI sports.

Slade was described as “the interpreter of the rules and guidelines set by New York state public athletic association.” Slade updated the board on Class C specifications, transferring rules, health and safety waivers and policies regarding referees

Slade went into more depth on transfer/tuition students. He clarified the rules on transferring.  Rules were set in place to avoid students from either “hopping from school to school to play with a winning team” and “to avoid students from playing more than four seasons of a certain varsity sport in high school.”

This rule applies to students even if they went to a school in another state. The overall goal is to ensure no one specific high school team is given an advantage.

The board and Slade also discussed the upcoming numbers for Ellicottville sports teams and how that will affect class classifications for next year. While no actual classifications have been determined yet, the teams will likely remain in the same classifications for the following 2020-21 academic school year.

In his report, Superintendent Bob Miller updated the board on the capital project. The banners have been made and placed throughout the school. There will be a Public Information Meeting held on Thursday, Dec. 5 in the high school cafeteria at 7 p.m. There will be a public vote held on Tuesday, Dec. 10 regarding the capital improvements from 1 pm to 8 pm.

IN OTHER BUSINESS, the board passed a resolution approving the Ellicottville Central School District Reserve Plan. In addition, several resolutions under new business were passed including approval of the 2019-20 Tax Collector’s Report, transfer of fund.

In addition, several resolutions under new business were passed including approval of the 2019-2020 Tax Collector’s Report, transfer of funds and lead evaluator Re-Certification for teacher evaluations as Robert Miller, Erich Ploetz, and Maren Bush. A resolution was also passed approving Rebecca Orbitz from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford in the Psychology/Counseling Psychology to complete an unpaid internship of 13.5 hours under Joe Prior from January 2020 to March 2020.
